Not exhaustive, not technical
This is not meant to be exhaustive. I don't cover scanners, CD-ROMs, DVDs,
cameras, and sound cards or musical input. Modems come up briefly in Email.
I include brand names only to make you aware of standard-setters.
What's here is not very technical. It's meant for non-techies who may be
interested in deciphering an ad or talking to a technical person in a computer
store. So there's sometimes technical details, but the detail aims for
consumer education, not for getting you certified in computer repair.

Who needs to know?
You don't have to know this stuff. You can decide what you want to
do on your prospective computer, fix a rough price level using the
Bang and
bucks table in the Your needs section, and go ahead and pick a model from a
reputable dealer. (Whether you're after a Mac or PC, however, be sure to check
out CCSF deals before you do, though.)
Mac users can easily pick a model from the limited number available,
trusting the descriptions in the Bookstore's apple link:
http://www.ccsf.cc.ca.us/Services/Bookstore/computers/apple/apple.htm. In
fact, Mac buyers don't need worry about dealers manipulating prices, since Apple rigidly controls prices and quality for new Macs.
