Serial Ports: major functions?
      COM port parts:  name, Interrupt Request (IRQ), memory address, UART
      common configuration problem with Internal modem?  with external modem?

Internal / External modem.  Recognize some advantages/disadvantages of each
What is DTE to DCE speed?   DCE to DCE speed?  how do they get set?
Where is error control handled with V.42?   compression with V.42bis?
What are V.32bis, V.34, V.90?    

Chapter 5.  Know the terms and be able to answer the questions on page 136.
   What is QAM?   What is a constellation?  Given a constellation, calculate
       how many bits are being sent with each signal change (or the reverse)
   EIA-232.  The four categories of signals.  
   Hardware and Software flow control?  What is RTS/CTS and XON/XOFF?
   Synchronous Flow control: stop-and-wait  versus sliding window
   Error Detection Methods:
      echo checking, odd and even parity checking, and
      cyclical redundancy checks (CRC),  16/32 bit, error rates?
   Error Correction Methods
      Positive Acknowledgement, Retransmission after Time-Out.
      Negative acknowledgement and retransmission
      ARQ  (stop-and-wait  versus go-back-N)
   Data Link Control:  HDLC (the general idea, not the details), LAPM 

Chapter 6.  The terms and questions on pages 166 and 167. Understand: 
   Multiplexing:   how the different kinds of multiplexing work
         Frequency division (FDM)  (see also pg. 107)
         Time division:  synchronous (TDM) or statistical (STDM)
   Compression:
         Lossless   (Run-Length Encoding, Lempel Ziv [in V.42bis and zip])
         Lossy  (JPEG and MPEG)  
             difference between intraframe and interframe compression
   T-1 = DS-1 = 1.544 Mbps.  Structure of a T-1 frame, number of frames/second?
       What kind of multiplexing?   How many logical channels?
   T-3 = DS-3 = 45 Mbps.
   
   SONET (Synchronus Optical Network) ANSI standard for digital transmission
         at speeds of 50 Mbps and up.  STS (electrical), OC (optical)
         Recognize:  OC-1, OC-3, OC-12  speeds
         International equivalent is SDH.  Also 8,000 frames/second.
   Why is there a  difference between the data rate and the payload?
