ARCH 29A & ARCH 32 accepted for Environmental Design 4 credit by the University of California, Berkeley

Course Objectives
This course is a basic freehand drawing course. The intent of the first half of the course will be to emphasize the skills and technique of freehand drawing using in-class exercises and homework assignments.  The second half of the course will concentrate on architectural freehand drawings.  Drawing assignments will be augmented by visual presentations. Informal "In-class" critiques and verbal presentations by the students and instructor, will be part of the class format.  Students are expected to spend an average of four or more hours a week outside of class time on all course work.  Work is expected to be done in the studio and outside of class.

Instructional Objectives
The objective of this course is to teach  the student:
1. To learn how to draw freehand, without the assistance of drawing instruments.
2. To communicate through drawing.

2. To study and learn composition and proportion.
4. To learn how to draw freehand perspective drawings.

Prerequisites
No previous skill or class is necessary.  This course is open to all interested students.  The class is designed for beginning architecture students.

Attendance
Attendance is required and will count towards your final grade! Students are expected to attend each class meeting and to be prepared to work in the studio for the entire period. Students with more than three unexcused absences may be dropped from the course.  If you will be absent, please email me or leave a voice mail before class begins.

Assignments
The drawing assignments will take a variety of subjects and initially will be informal and leading into more formal finished work.  Students are expected to keep a Portfolio of ALL drawing assignments and exercises and small sketches. The Portfolio will be handed in just before midterm period and at the end of the semester just before finals.  Portfolios will be evaluated on the quality of student work.

Grading
Grading will be based on attendance and number of completed assignments.  Overall course grading is based on the following:

Drawings                                         50%
Portfolio and Self Improvement        30%
Attendance                                      20%
Total Grade                                   100%

Required Text
Drawing: A Creative Process , by Francis D.K. Ching
This book is not required for the course.  However, it is an excellent book that comprehensively and graphically explains basic drawing styles and techiques. Ching is famous for his hand drawn and lettered books on Architecture.
It is very visual and contains excellent examples of pencil drawings.

Optional Texts
Drawing and Perceiving, Douglas Cooper, Second Edition
Cooper's book is a compilation of various drawing techniques and styles.  It is a good preface to architectural drawing
and the sections on texture, perspective and light are especially interesting.  We will use some of his techniques in class.

Reference Books and Bibliography
These books are listed as support references for the course.  These books are good references that I use for the course.  Many of the drawing exercises come directly from Betty Edwards book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.
