Your letters do not have to be complicated. Just write aabout
your personal stories. How is City College (credit and
noncredit) helping you to achieve your goals? How has City
College already helped you to succeed?
The information below is older. I will sort through it, and
delete outdated information, but for now, use the links above.

Current updates:
GOOD NEWS: The committee gave up
the idea of converting low level credit ESL into noncredit.
- Non-credit
students and teachers have been very active in writing letters and
emails. The Student Success Task Force listened to them and
noncredit classes are safe.
- Some talking
points for ESL Credit:
- Committee
members are thinking about a statewide assessment test for ESL
students.
These changes could affect ESL credit students in a negative
way. If you are writing to committee members or other government
officials, you
can include these talking points. Probably the most effective
thing that you can do is to write about how your City College
classes are helping you to succeed. The
overall tone of this committee is that community colleges are a
failure. They think that the only definition
of success is that students finish a program, get a 2 year degree
with no breaks or extra time, and go on to a university or a
job. If you disagree with this
definition of success, include this in your letters or emails.
This committee has not made their decisions yet! Your emails and
letters will affect their decisions.
What can you do?
1. Write letters or emails:
Faculty: I just sent this letter
to Senator Liu, Governor Brown, and Chancellor Scott. Please feel
free to copy it and send your own version. Note: There is no immediate need
to defend low level credit ESL from conversion to noncredit. The
committee has dropped that idea.
Senator Carol Liu is the one who originally asked for a report about
community colleges, though most likely she did not ask for anything as
far reaching as what the Task Force has generated. Her address at the
Capitol is :
Senator Carol Liu
State Capitol, Room 5061
Sacramento, CA 95814
Another option is the :
California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office
Jack Scott, Chancellor
1102 Q Street
Sacramento, California 95811-6549
You can also send letters or emails to Governor Jerry Brown.
These addresses and more are listed
on
this
page.
When you send an email, write Oppose SSTF in the subject
line. If you are sending a letter, write Oppose SSTF on the
outside of the envelope.
2. Post a paragraph about your personal success on one of
the links listed on:
