Course
Description: There are three
objectives for this course. In the
area of writing, students will be able to write an essay with several
paragraphs, a clear thesis statement, and supporting ideas. You will also work on developing ideas,
revising ideas, and editing. In the
area of grammar, you will improve your ability to accurately use grammatical
structures, including comparisons, adjective clauses, noun clauses, and a
variety of verb forms and tenses.
In the area of reading, students will be able to read, interpret, and
write summaries and responses to a variety of reading materials. You will be
expected to do writing, reading, and grammar assignments every week. As a rule,
you should plan to spend at least ten hours a week on homework and studying.
Although I will not collect or grade all assignments, you will have quizzes and
tests which include material from these assignments. Some of these quizzes will be
"surprise" quizzes.

Final Exam
The following
percentages will be used to calculate your grades:
¥ Homework 35%
¥ Quizzes and tests 35%
¥ In-class writing
tests
30%
Your final grade will be calculated with the same
percentages, although the work done before the midterm and after the midterm
will be calculated as follows:
¥ Midterm 10%
¥ After the midterm 65%
¥ Final exams 25%
You are allowed to
"throw out" one grade before the midterm and one "throw
out" grade between the midterm and final.
Exceptions: You can not
throw out any midterm or final test grades; you may only throw out one in-class
writing test for the entire semester.
All homework is due
at the beginning of class. Assignments will be accepted late, but the grade
will be lowered.
Save all tests and
homework assignments. Make a
copy of any assignment before giving it to me.
Plagiarism: Any student who copies work from another
student, from a book, or from the Internet, will receive a grade of ÒFÓ for the
assignment. This is called plagiarism
and it is not acceptable in American colleges. You must do your own work.
Attendance: If a student is absent from more than six
classes, the instructor has the right to drop him from the class or lower his
final grade. Two lates=one absence.
Arriving to class late, leaving class for an extended period of time, and
leaving early will be counted as a Òlate.Ó If you miss more than half of a
class period, you will be marked absent for that day. If you are absent, contact another
student to get the assignment. You
are responsible for all work and information that you missed.
There are no make-ups on quizzes, tests, or in-class
writing.
You must meet all of the
following requirements in order to pass the class.
¥ Follow attendance rules.
¥ Pass
at least one in-class writing test (including the composition final) in the second
half of the semester.
¥ Have an overall
average of 70% in all work.
