Prerequisite: Completion of ESL 112 with a grade of
Credit or C or higher or placement in ESL 122
Required
Textbook: Take on Listening 1 by Scholnick and
Gabler
Recommended: Longman Dictionary of American English
Materials: Three ring binder and paper.
Course
Description: This course is an introduction to
academic listening and speaking. You will work on speaking activities and some
presentations with vocabulary and grammar similar to that in ESL 120. Because
this class meets only 3 hours a week, you will do some of your homework in CLAD
(Multiuse Building)
and some simple listening assignments on a computer. You will be expected to do homework
every week. There will be oral
assignments and written assignments. There will be quizzes based on material
from the book.

(Please note that this exam time is a
slightly different time than our normal class.)
The following
percentages will be used to calculate your grades:
¥ Written homework 30%
¥ Oral homework 35%
¥ Quizzes and tests 35%
Your final grade
will be calculated with the same percentages, although the work done before the
midterm and after the midterm will be calculated as follows:
¥ Midterm 25%
¥ After the midterm 75%
Note: This class may be taken for a credit/no
credit grade rather than for a letter grade.
You are allowed to "throw out"
one grade before the midterm and one "throw out" grade between the
midterm and final.
Exceptions: You can not
throw out any midterm or final test grades.
Save all tests and graded homework. Make a copy of any assignment before
giving it to me.
Attendance:
If a student is absent
from more than six classes, the instructor has the right to drop him from the
class or lower his final grade. Two
lates=one absence
If you are absent, contact another student to get the
assignment. You are responsible for
all work and information that you missed.
There are no make-ups on quizzes, or tests.

allowed in class.
No food is allowed in class.
You must buy the book for the class. No photocopies are allowed. If you buy a used book, the book must be
clean, with all of the answers erased.
