ESL 79 is an advanced ESL speech course. In this class you will learn and practice public speaking skills in English. The course will include the techniques of gathering and organizing information, planning presentations, documenting your information, interviewing, and working in small groups. There will be a total of five oral presentations, some individual and some with a group, several quizzes on text and lecture materials, required library workshop and lab attendance, and a written and oral final.

TEXT: Communicating Effectively in English, by P. A. Porter and M. Grant

ATTENDANCE: Your attendance is very important, particularly because a great deal of communication and work with materials from the text take place in class. Each class session will consist of oral practice, group activities and lecture, and you will be responsible for everything that is discussed in class and written on the board concerning the lessons whether you are present or not. Attendance will be checked at each class session and you will be allowed a total of 2 absences – provided that they do not interfere with your scheduled oral presentations. If you are absent more than 2 times, you may be dropped from the class. Being late for class 3 times is equivalent to one absence, so please make a point of arriving on time! If you are absent on a day when you are supposed to meet with your group, it is your responsibility to contact the group members. You may not make up any quiz or oral presentation that you miss!

ORAL PRESENTATIONS: Presenting information orally is the main focus of this class. The 5 presentations will be evaluated in detail, and must therefore be carefully planned and practiced. Two of the speeches will be individual, and 3 (including the final speech) will be group presentations. When you are working with a group, you are responsible for your share of the research, organization, planning and presentation. Some presentations will require meeting with your group outside of class. It is your responsibility to schedule and attend these meetings.

HOMEWORK: Homework assignments will include, reading, research, summarizing, outlining and organizing information. All homework assignments and presentations must be prepared by the date that they are due. This is particularly important when you are working on a group assignment.

WORKSHOP and LAB REQUIREMENT: Part of the requirement for passing this ESL 79 class is workshop and lab attendance. You can fulfill this requirement by attending 10 hours of lab in addition to 4 library research skills workshops. If you have already attended any of the research skills workshops in the past 2 years, you may bring in proof and get credit for previous attendance. You may fulfill your lab requirement by working with CDs in the ESL Lab on the 4th floor of the library and/or by attending pronunciation workshops at the LAC on the 2nd floor of the library. For more information, click here .

Note:
  • If you have attended the library research skills workshops within the last 2 years, you can receive credit for them.
  • In order to use pronunciation tapes at the Media Center, you must attend the orientation first.
  • There is a monthly schedule of workshops available, but not very many are offered and only 12 people can attend each one, so get there early!
  • Your workshop and lab attendance will be checked at the end of the semester.
GRADES: Your final grade will be based on the following formula:

oral presentations - 40%
quizzes and midterm - 30%
homework assignments and workshop attendance - 10%
final exam and presentation - 20%
