This course explores the broad field of engineering and concentrates on how to be a successful engineering student.

Engn 10A and Engn 10B are required of all engineering students attending San Francisco State University, San Jose State University and University of California at Berkeley. For specific requirements for your major, go to www.assist.org.

This class is an online version of the regular Engn 10A class that meets once a week for 2 hours.  The online class is taught very differently than the on-campus class.  The online course is centered around the textbook and requires you to read, upload weekly written assignments, post and read discussion topics and take two on campus exams based on the reading.

The on-campus class meets two hours per week requiring you to come to the campus and attend the two hour lecture, comprehensive note taking, written assignments and exams. There are 34 hours of class time plus homework while the online requires 6 hours of class time but more reading and written assignments.  The work load in both is the same except the online version requires you to manage your workload.  The class is 17 weeks long.

Is this class for you?? There are four  factors to answer this question.

           1) Do I need this class.
All engineering students should take this class.
The information is a powerful tool to help you
succeed in one of the most demanding and rewarding careers.
In addition, it is REQUIRED at  San Francisco State University,
San Jose State University and UC Berkeley.

           2)  You should be a college level reader able to comprehend concepts and facts and
use this information to make short statements and take exams.

           3)  You should have the self discipline to manage your learning by following
the time line for the required tasks.  See the statement below if this is you first
                  online class.

           4)  You should be very comfortable using a computer  including downloading and
uploading files as well creating Microsoft word documents.

Is this your first online class?

Taking an online class is very different than a traditional class.  You are the person who
will make sure the work is done in a timely manner.  You will need to set aside time to do your work every week.  If this was a normal class, you could expect to
spend 2 hours per week in class and 1 hours outside of class.  Online will not
be any different.  Since you attend a limited number of on campus sessions, you should be spending 3 hours per week on this class. In addition, you should be very comfortable with computer use:  Downloading and uploading files, navigating a web page, logging on to check posted messages and e-mail, running CD based video clips.  It will take a better time management effort on your part. The instructor will guide you through the course by using the management software call MOODLE.  You will need to log on a minimum of two times a week to make sure you are fully engaged in the class requirements.

The first few weeks is an adjustment to get use to the procedures and requirements.  After
this period, everything is routine.  Remember, you are taking more responsibility for your
learning but the benefit is a more flexible weekly schedule.
