Description: |
|
|
|
|
The student will develop practical skills with the use of microcomputer relational database management. Topics include creating, maintaining, querying database tables. Forms, reports, advanced queries are developed using case problems. Macros/Switchboards are applied to business applications. The Internet will be fully explored. Web Pages will be developed, and online databases will be developed. The students will create six class practice-databases. The students will also develop/Practice-mini-projects. See required homework. Access 2003 is used. A Message Board can be used for student class communication, Glenn's Message Board. The students may sign the Guest Book so that they can exchange Email addresses. Glenn's Guest Book. |

Prerequisites: The ability to type. Students must have basic computer skills. |

Three unexcused absences will reduce your final grade by one grade point on a four-point scale. Late for the class three times will constitute one unexcused absence. The student will be dropped from the course that has five unexcused absences. |

All homework assignments are all the concepts, exercises, and some of the projects at the end of each chapter. The due dates and specific projects will be announced. You must keep records of the due dates of all these assignments. |

Extra credit work is at the election of the instructor. Topics must be approved. |
Missed Classes: You are responsible for the activities of each class period. If you know of a conflict ahead of time, you are welcome to submit projects early. There is no absolute right to a make up test unless you have an acceptable excuse. If you do not take a test on the scheduled day and have an excuse, contact me for a makeup quiz. Makeup quizzes are typically more rigorous than the regularly-scheduled test (i.e. You may be asked to complete two or three Independent Challenges instead of only one.)
All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the date due. Late assignments receive half credit.

Teaching Methods:
1. The first half of each class will be used to highlight the important material within each unit using interactive discussions, group work, handouts, and computer demos.
2. The last half of each class is dedicated to hands-on learning, facilitated by the instructor. You will work at your own pace during this portion of the class to solidify the lesson material or to begin work on the weekly projects. Also, class lab assignments will be required. Scanners/sound recording will be explored. Databases will be applied to a site.
3. Each case project is at the end of each chapter. Projects that correlate to chapters will be assigned by the class schedule throughout the course. Also, class lab assignments will be required.
4. Quizzes will be given. Quiz exercises are from the class notes/exercises, and they will be announced in class.
5. Internet Support Note some chapters require Internet access; for some features to work, you will also need Internet access.
Basic experience with the Windows operating system is assumed. It is the students'responsibilty to make any arrangement necessary to obtain a personal tutor. The instructor will not be the student's personal database designer to design and develop the student's personal/business databases (project). The student is required to learn the course concepts/material, and then create and develop their own personal/business database. The student must design and develop their databases independently, and use the online course information and the instructor as guidelines. The instructor will not install software on the student's personal computer at the students' home or business. The students are responsible and accountable for their own personal property. No cell phones, recorders, camcorders, or any other electrical device is allowed in the classroom without the permission of the instructor. No guests or children are allowed in the classroom without the expressed permission of the instructor or the Business Office.
