Information for Spring 2009 Math 840 Online Students

Math 840 Sections 831 will have a ***MANDATORY*** orientation on Tuesday January 19. Section 832 will have a ***MANDATORY*** orientation on Thursday January 21. Both orientations will be held in Arts Extension 180 on the Ocean Avenue Campus. After that, both sections will meet on Thursdays except for the Midterm Exams. See below for more information.

GENERAL

Mr. Teti's sections of Math 840 (Elementary Algebra) are HYBRID online classes: there are weekly class meetings. Only students who can attend these weekly meetings should enroll. These sections are not intended for students who must travel great distances. They are intended for CCSF students who do not benefit from traditional lecture and who are comfortable teaching themselves mathematics out of a text. If you live far away please consider taking Algebra at a college near you.

INITIAL CONTACT

(1) Be sure to give CCSF your email address when you register.

(2) Be sure you can receive email from me without spam-filter issues.

(3) The weekend before the semester starts I will send an announcement to the list of email addresses the school gives me notifying you that you have access to the course website. If by some miracle you manage to register after I send that email you will not receive it but you MUST still attend the orientation!

ORIENTATIONS

Section 831's mandatory orientation is on Tuesday January 19 from 8-9 a.m. in Arts Extension 180 on the Ocean Avenue Campus.

Section 832's mandatory orientation is on Thursday January 21from 8-9 a.m. in Arts Extension 180 on the Ocean Avenue Campus.

Registered students who do not attend the orientation or who arrive after I have taken roll WILL BE DROPPED from the class roster.

ATTENDANCE AT WEEKLY MEETINGS

After the first week, both sections will meet weekly on THURSDAYS 8-9 a.m. in Arts Extension 180 on the Ocean Avenue Campus. Students must NOT enroll in any other class that meets on Thursdays at the same time or else you will have a Final Exam conflict! Students in Section 831 must arrange also to be available on the orientation date and on the Tuesday of the week of the Midterm Exam (TBA). This is because I do not have a room large enough for both groups at once.

Although the class meetings after the orientations are not mandatory (which is why I can hold them in one room) , students who do not attend run the risk of missing information not available on the course website. Furthermore, I will withdraw students who have missed any weekly class meetings and who do not pass the Midterm Exam.

Students must also be prepared to browse the course website EVERY DAY, even if just for a minute, to read new email and new discussion board postings.

TEXT

I require access to the text. The text is the current CCSF Math 840 book, Introductory Algebra for College Students, Fifth Edition, by Robert Blitzer. You will be able to purchase it at the CCSF bookstore, or use it in the Library reserve room. The 13-digit ISBN is 978-0-13-235679-4. The 10-digit ISBN is 0-13-235679-1. I do not require you to buy the "MyMathLab" bundle that is available with the text but some students buy it anyway and they find that it enhances the course. By the way, I am NOT expert in the many ways that textbooks come "bundled" these days. Please direct your textbook questions to the salespeople, not to me.

TESTS: Weekly Quizzes, Midterm Exam, and Final Exam

There are regular paper-and-pencil quizzes to be submitted by hand-delivery, email, or fax. There will be also mandatory in-class exams for the midterm and final. Students must bring photo IDs to these exams. The Midterm Exam dates will be announced in class. (For students in Section 831 that date will be a Tuesday!) We will follow the regular CCSF schedule for final exams: look for the date and time for Tuesday-Thursday 8-9 a.m. classes

ADDING PROCEDURE FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS

Students trying to add into a section (that is, students not already registered) MUST bring with them to the mandatory orientations their registration tickets (the computer printout from the CCSF registration site) showing their web registration date and time. I will add students in order of their reg dates until the room is at legal capacity (~45 students). Then I will have to ask the remaining students to leave. Please do not ask for an exception because of hardship.
