Course objectives: This is a primarily project-based course, intended to aid students who wish to collaborate with the purpose of implementing sustainability principles, in particular, the promotion of bicycling as alternative transportation. At the end of the course, students will be able to discuss bicycle-related issues from bicycle mechanics, bicycle safety to urban bicycle policies and the ecological impact of bicycling. Through work in the campus bike kitchen students will gain first-hand experience with a community run project and practical experience with bicycle repair and public outreach. Course materials (required)
Course format This course, from its first conception, has been student-driven and a collaboration-in-process. As such, the precise nature of its content and activities are not entirely predetermined. The course will evolve in a direction determined by the topic and studentŐs inquiries into the topic and in response to the developing participation and dialogue of students, faculty and outside consultants. Lectures will typically consist of a guest speaker
presentation and a student-led discussion. You are required to work a total of
32 hours/semester in the campus bike kitchen and to attend one safety class and
one safety ride during the semester Please sign up for the safety class and ride a soon as possible at https://www.sfbike.org/?edu (Street skills and On the road). You can find course
handouts, links, and student work on my website at Attendance Attendance is mandatory for all scheduled lectures. You can miss one lecture without penalty. If you miss more than one lecture, please contact the instructor before class for an alternative assignment. You will not pass the class with more than three absences in lecture or if you do not fulfill the work experience requirement (32 and 10 hours, see above). Assignments and grades Your grade will be determined by the quality of (1) your independent research project and (2) your preparation, facilitation and evaluation of a discussion of one of the chapters of Pedal Power. A list of of possible project topics generated by the Green Corps is attached to this syllabus. Detailed instructions for both assignments will be given on 8/25.
Professional conduct Please let me know when you will be absent, come to class on time and do not miss your scheduled bike kitchen hours, as others depend on you. Let me know any problems you might have as soon as possible, so that we have a chance to address them. I will not tolerate academic dishonest, which includes cheating, plagiarizing (taking credit for the work of others), and knowingly providing false information. If you have any question or concern regarding academic dishonesty, please talk to me or consult the City College catoalog or the Student handbook. Information on how to avoid plagiarism is available on at http://fog.ccsf.edu/~cpogge/Bio 92/bio92index.html. NB: All of the information in this syllabus is subject to change if necessary.
