| Fall 2008 Literature Electives Beginning Fall of 2008, the English Department will be scheduling electives in two year cycles, so you'll always know what literature electives are going to be offered down the road a ways, and can plan accordingly. For now, though, we're just happy to have settled on a schedule for the literature electives we'll be offering Fall of 2008. Here they are: English 14A: Literary Magazine (Tuesday Eves 6:30-9:30). Hey, this blurb's from English Major Alex Dixon, who is responsible for resucitating the CCSF Lit Magazine. He writes: The literary magazine class is back! English 14A (Literary Magazine) teaches students how to produce, edit, manage, and publish a literary magazine that will be distributed to students and faculty on campus. The 3-unit, CSU-transferable, credit/no credit class will meet Tuesday nights from 6:30 to 9:30. It will have two instructors, Jen Sullivan Brych and Louise Nayer. E-mail Alex Dixon at citylitjournal@gmail.com if you're interested in signing up for the class, or if you would like to publish short stories or poetry in this semester's ad-hoc literary journal, Forum. English 46B: Survey of English Literature, from Restoration to Romanticism (MWF 11-12). This class is required for students thinking of transferring to Berkeley as English Majors. It picks up where English 46A leaves off and sets you up nicely for, um, 46C... In it, you'll get your hands dirty with Restoration comedy, witness the birth of the novel, and experience the ecstacies of Romanticism, among other things. English 50: Myth and Literature (Thursday Eves 7-10). Ever wonder where Stephen Dedalus gets his name from? English 57: Women and Literature (Wednesday Eves 7-10). Come on, you know you've always wanted to take this course. English 59: Literary Analysis (Tue/Thu days 11-12:30). Hey, this one was specially requested by a group of 46A students, and you know the English department -- we aim to please. Ever wonder what all those fancy "isms" refer to -- structuralism, deconstructionism, and so forth? Want to impress folks at parties? Take this class, taught by Craig Kleinman. Over the next few days I'll be posting the instructors and their contact information for these courses, so if you have any questions about the course, you can contact them directly. In the meantime, of course, you can contact me at cgreger@ccsf.edu if you have any questions or comments. |

Poem of the...Moment This issue of the English Major Bulletin Board is co-sponsored by Forum, CCSF's new literary journal. Periodically, we'll be posting poems and short stories sent to us by the journal's editors. Our inaugural poem: The Hudson Divide Under the lamppost droplets on the windshield make polka dot shadows on her jeans. The red Wawa sign, the watery lines of the landscape, the light from the parking lot that escapes the divide. She is warm behind the glass, in this state of New Jersey, but the image of cold water leaves her goosebumped. She turns the radio on, then off again, her fingers lay, still anxious from her defense, unprepared for a September different from the rest. The leather seat creaks beneath her, as if to bring her back here. And now the idle shadows of water leave no impression in her eyes, as she withdraws farther and farther from the warring sky. -- Alexandra MacArthur |
