ASTRONOMY 14, Section 2, Spring 2010
Here is a copy of the
syllabus, if you did not get one in class:
Syllabus
General comment on the
class: As is true of any class, the
quiz, homework, and exam scores have ranged all across the board from high A to
low F. However, this section was below
the norm. Even if I consider only those
students who stayed through the complete semester, all of the exam averages
(except for the very last ones) were bare C-minuses. Both attendance and displayed classroom
attitudes also struck me as more problematic than most, so I cannot feel
surprised that this class performed poorly compared to most other ASTR-14
classes that I have taught (including a second section this same
semester). But the class average does
not reflect the range of individual achievement. I applaud and congratulate those who did very
well, and I also recognize that the students who did not do as well each had
their own personally complicated reasons and challenges.
Here are the results from
Exam #4, Exam #5, and the Final Exam, posted only by the code name (if you
elected to give me one—several people, whose results ranged from high to low,
chose not to participate in the public posting) that you wrote on your test
paper: As has been true of every class
I’ve ever taught, the relatively easy Final Exam had the highest average. (However, the average on the C/B borderline
is, quite honestly, the lowest class average I’ve seen in many years for one of
my easier Final Exams. I have to admit
to still being disappointed by that result.)
Even though the news here, for many, is not the
greatest, I wish everyone a wonderful summer break and the best of success in
all of your future endeavors!
